Verbal Probing
Verbal probing consists of follow up questions to the think-aloud process. It may provide additional information on the respondent's interpretations and processes.
Considerations
- Developing verbal probes
- When to ask
Categories for developing verbal probles
Adapted from Willis (2005).
- Comprehension/Interpretation: What does the term 'x' mean to you?
- Paraphrasing: Could you explain the question in your own words?
- Confidence judgment: how confident are you have that response?
- Recall: how were you able to remember that...?
- Further explain (Willis "specific probe"): could you explain why you think ...?"
- General: How did you arrive at that answer? How hard/easy was it to answer?
Discussion questions
- Do some probe categories map on to the CASM stages? Which ones?
- Develop probes from each category for these survey examples:
- Rating question for Citi Online
- Applying the SUS rating to the task of enrolling a course with campusconnect
