Verbal Probing

Verbal probing consists of follow up questions to the think-aloud process. It may provide additional information on the respondent's interpretations and processes.

  • Comprehension/Interpretation: What does the term 'x' mean to you?
  • Paraphrasing: Could you explain the question in your own words?
  • Confidence judgment: how confident are you have that response?
  • Recall: how were you able to remember that...?
  • Further explain (Willis "specific probe"): could you explain why you think ...?"
  • General: How did you arrive at that answer? How hard/easy was it to answer?
