Team Project 1
Survey Evaluation
Due Sunday February 23 before 11:30pm

Overview

Working with a team, you will propose a survey and create a set of draft questions for it.

Survey Selection Requirements

The domain, scope and specifics of the inquiry objectives are up to you, but here are the main requirements:

  • The proposal must have at least one inquiry objective that calls for a comparison either across split samples, across questions within a one form, or across multiple sample frames.
  • The inquiry objectives must call for closed-ended questions with quantitive responses and open-ended questions with text response.

Here are some additional considerations when choosing your domain and research questions:

  • Will each team member be able to interview at least two people that are representative of the survey's targeted population?
  • Do you have the means to reach a sample that is representative of your targeted population? At least 20 responses is a goal.

Proposal Requirements

Your survey proposal should include the following details:

  • Inquiry objectives
  • Description of your target population
  • Method for accessing your target population(s) (sample frame)
  • Sample questions including survey design

Deliverables

Create a report with the following sections:

  1. Executive Summary
  2. Background and motivation, ending with inquiry objectives
  3. Survey description (see proposal requirements)
  4. Summary of how survey addresses inquiry objectives
  5. Appendix materials including how individuals contributed

The executive summary is a one paragraph (maybe two) overview of your whole report.

Team Process

The following is a recommended set of team phases and deadlines:

  • Survey Proposals (Wednesday February 12). Individuals share possible survey projects and objectives.
  • Survey Plan (Monday February 17). Reach consensus on major survey properties including idealized population, sample frame and inquiry objectives.
  • Individual Questions (Thursday February 20). Propose and share indvidual questions that address the inquiry objectives.
  • Finalize report (Sunday February 23). Consolidate and revise survey questions. Write executive summary. Edit and proofread. Submit!

Submission

The submitted document should use a common presentation format, ideally PDF. Submit the document through D2L. A rubric for grading the assignment is present with the dropbox submission folder.

Grading

This project is worth 10% of the course grade and will be reviewed using the following criteria:

  • Completeness. All requirements are addressed.
  • Clarity. The inquiry objectives and method are understandable.
  • Soundness. The survey questions address the inquiry objectives.
  • Ease of review. The document is organized and content presented to faciliate review of the above criteria.

Generally, all team members receive the same score. In exceptional cases, where some individuals are contributing substantially more or less, differing scores will be assigned.
