Analysis to Ideation

Adapted from Saffer chapter 6

Process for our class

  1. List themes
  2. Create personas
  3. List pain points and opportunities
  4. Identify calls to action

List themes

These may include the following (also see touchpoint list p 99):

  • Goals
  • Preferences
  • Dislikes
  • Frustrations
  • Activities
  • Tools and artifacts

Try to create a list of a dozen themes from your interviews

Create Personas

Create 2, 3 or 4 personas that summarize most of the themes. Give each persona a name. Provide additional details that are consistent with the themes

Indicate which elements came from your themes.

List pain points and opportunities

Using your persona names, create a list of pain points and opportunities. Example from the apartment domain:

Sally needs to move in to an apartment before August 23 but doesn't want to pay for more days than necessary. She's having difficulty finding out which apartments would best fit her preferred move-in date.

Follow Tesler's Law (see p. 118): Design for the Users!

Identify calls to actions

Discuss 2 or 3 (and at least one) call to action that will serve as your future design project.

A call to action might include any of the following:

  • A new (hopefully simple) app that addresses the problem
  • A reorganized screen of a current app/tool/interface that addresses the problem
  • An added feature to a current app/tool/interface
