Students receiving more than 90% of possible points are guaranteed at least an A-, more than 80% at least a B-, more than 70% at least a C-, and more than 60% at least a D.
Participation
The participation grade is subjectively based on the following guidelines:
- 18-20 points: regularly attends class and arrives on time; engages in discussions and activities in each class
- 16-17 points: attends nearly every class and generally arrives on time; generally engages in discussions and activities in class
- 14-15 points: attends most class meetings on time; often engages in discussions and class activities
- 13 points or less: attends few classes with minimal participation, with points assigned in proportion to attendance and activity
Attendance and on-time arrival are explicitly noted for class meetings.
Students are expected to attend class meetings in person. When attending in person is not possible (e.g. because of sickness), students are still responsible for the course content, which may involve accessing notes, examples, and watching any recorded content. In case of absence, sending an email message explaining the absence and summarizing the study effort may count towards participation.
Assignments
All assignments require a written summary of your personal individual experience in completing the assignment. You should not us AI for writing the summary, and you probably will not receive credit if you do. We will go over good examples of written summaries. I will read all written summaries and primarily grade the assignment on your written summary.
The goal of assignments is to become proficient with the concepts taught in class. Submissions must use constructs and conventions taught in class. Submissions with other constructs and conventions, such as that offered by online resources and AI agents, are subject to receiving no credit.
The use of AI (e.g. CoPilot, ChatGPT, Claude) is permitted in some contexts and sometimes encouraged. Acceptable uses include the following:
- Use of AI to explain code while you are learning.
- Use of AI to produce practice questions and problems.
- Use of AI in your assignments provided that all of the following are true:
- You are the primary author of the answer
- You have carefully reviewed (possibly altered) all answers or code so that you understand how it works.
- The answer or code is consistent with the concepts and style discussed in class.
- You discuss the use of AI in your summary report for the project.
Use of AI is not required for successfully completing the course.
No AI tools will be permitted during the exams or quizzes.
Late assignments will be accepted up to three days late with a one point penalty. Assignments submitted more than 3 days after the due date will not be accepted. The late penalty will be waived for the first assignment.
Additional assignments for extra credit will not be offered.
Exams and Quizzes
Quizzes and exams must be taken in person. When completing exams or quizzes, students may not collaborate with any other person, nor use any external resources. Collaboration with others on exams will be considered a violation of the university's policy on academic integrity. Violators will receive a zero for the corresponding exam and will be reported as required by the policy.
If a quiz is missed, its score will be inferred (using linear regression) from the score on the subsequent exam, minus a 1 point penalty.
Exams can be made up with a serious documented excuse (e.g. illness, death in the family) and must be arranged as soon as possible. Arrangements involving other excuses require prior permission from the instructor.
Additional policies
All grade challenges must be submitted in writing and include an explanation why the given score or grade should be reconsidered.
