Exercise on Writing Recommendations

Consider the following usability bugs that are described by fictitious (yet plausible) test results. For each bug, write a useful finding and recommendation that might appear in an evaluation report.

  1. Application: Simple form for performing course substitutions
  2. Test result: all 5 participants took more than 5 seconds selecting a course label (i.e. IT) for the label drop down menu.

  3. Application: CampusConnect (Guest Login)
  4. Test result: when trying to find what sociology courses were offered next quarter, 4 out of 7 test participants first selected "Schedule of Classes." Of the 4, only 1 eventually scrolled to the sociology listings from this selection. The other 3 returned to the main menu to look elsewhere.

  5. Application: instructor view of students for D2L dropbox.
  6. Test result: Of 7 test participants, no one was able to successfully display all of the students ("Show everyone" option).

  7. Application: Final Exam Lookup Form
  8. Test result: 2 of 9 test users mistakenly selected the checkbox for Wednesday when the task called for selection of Tuesday. Three additional users expressed confusion in identifying the correct checkbox, although they were able to successfully make the selection.
